Erdman Anthony was contracted to provide engineering design for an extensive maintenance upgrade at East Pennsboro Area Middle School. Phase I included upgrades to the indoor swimming pool, the large group instruction room, and the locker room. Upgrades to the lighting, HVAC, and sound system were made in the instruction room. In the indoor swimming pool area, all existing light fixtures were removed and new, energy efficient, low-glare "light pipe" fixtures were installed, as well as new emergency lighting. The locker room also received new lighting fixtures and new emergency lighting.
HVAC design elements included heat recovery and dehumidification, exhaust systems, and the addition of heating coils in existing ductwork. Plumbing was reconfigured for new shower areas, and fixtures were updated throughout. Special electrical design elements were added to the group instruction room, such as dimmable house lighting, theatrical lighting, a logic-controlled dimming system, second source lighting, a sound system, and motorized projection screens.
Phase II of this project included lighting renovations to selected classrooms, two cafeterias, and the library. It also included the design for a new rescue assist system, which consists of special lighted signage and a voice intercom system at designated areas on the second floor of the building.
