Erdman Anthony provided preliminary and final design services for the reconstruction and capacity improvements along 3.5 miles of I-490, a major six-lane highway that bisects Rochester, including 20 bridges in this section from the Erie Canal to the Genesee River. As part of this project, Erdman Anthony designed the new Frederick Douglass - Susan B. Anthony Memorial Bridge (Troup Howell Bridge) as a replacement for the existing bridge. The new bridge is 1,180'-long, with an arch span of 433'. The three-member steel arch structure is the first of its kind in the United States. Design features contributing to the bridge's appeal include a low profile that enhances sight distance along I-490, rounded support beams and cable support linkages to enhance visual interest and a fanned array of support cables to echo the shape of the arch. This project was awarded the 2007 Merit Award in the Category of Major Span from the National Steel Bridge Alliance's and the Best of 2007, Project of the Year Award, Bridge Category from New York Construction magazine.
