Erdman Anthony provided the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering, design, and construction assistance services necessary for the full $21.5 million rehabilitation of an existing building and new building addition to Bailey Hall on the SUNY Geneseo campus in Geneseo, New York.
The new Bailey Hall has a total floor area of 74,000 gross square feet, with a number of shared spaces, including 10 general-use classrooms, large lecture rooms, and casual interaction space in a central two-story atrium that support existing campus needs while conserving energy and reducing operating costs. The modern, comfortable, and sustainably designed facility houses the college’s anthropology, sociology, psychology, and geography departments, including a 3,500-square-foot BSL-2 lab.
Existing structural constraints made it imperative for Erdman Anthony’s design to meet the programmatic needs of the renovated facility while fitting within the structure’s tight floor-to-floor dimensions. This was accomplished with fully integrated 3D design software and clash detection software to ensure that our design was constructible and the mechanical equipment would fit and operate correctly.
In addition, stress analysis software was used to analyze the campus steam lines for the new steam mains and verify that the changes would not adversely affect the existing system. As designs and concepts evolved, the technology allowed us to continually address design changes and predict system conflicts. Steam lines are now protected and designed to accommodate current and future buildings to the north and south.
To further improve safety, the building energy management system controls airflow to keep the research lab area under a negative pressure in relation to other areas of the building.
