Erdman Anthony provided final design for the replacement of an existing two-span concrete bridge over Deer Creek on SR 0208/352. The replacement structure is an 80-foot single-span prestressed-concrete PA I-beam bridge with integral abutments, built using staged construction.
Key design tasks included field survey/right-of-way mapping, structural design, roadway design, and utility coordination. Aerial utilities were surveyed so that cranes would have enough clearance during construction. Waterway permitting was expedited using GP-11 criteria.
Our team also evaluated guide-rail needs to minimize the length and associated construction cost and analyzed adjacent driveways to determine sight-distance needs.
Maintaining local business access during construction was a key design concern, as was utility coordination, which involved the relocation of a four-inch gas line, a domestic water line, and a fire hydrant.
PennDOT, District 10-0 provided preliminary engineering for this project, and Erdman Anthony's final design provided value-adding input. For instance, our firm modified the traffic-control plan to simplify intersection construction adjacent to the bridge using a side-road detour.
Our firm also minimized impacts to overhead utilities adjacent to the bridge by using cantilever arms attached to the existing poles, eliminating the need to relocate them.
Erdman Anthony received an “Exceeds Expectations” evaluation from the district for its efforts on this project.
