SUNY Binghamton - Renovation and Expansion of Student Union

Our Projects

Erdman Anthony provided design services for the renovation and expansion of the 90,000-square-foot student union complex at SUNY Binghamton in Binghamton, New York. The renovation of and additions to the Union North facility were designed to create a central hub for student activity and to unify the existing student-union services. The student union is home to several student organizations and consists of a lobby, large meeting rooms, auditorium, professional offices, retail space, recreation rooms, and dining options at the Marketplace. It also helps connect the east and west ends of campus and acts as a central gathering point for students.

Erdman Anthony provided engineering design for the HVAC, electrical, fire protection, and plumbing systems. The design team evaluated multiple options for each system so that comfort conditioning was met for the wide variety of occupancy types and uses intended for the facility. Detailed energy modeling was performed to evaluate each of the alternatives fully.

One of the unique design features included a smoke control system that allowed for a grand atrium space to be provided. This life-safety building systems solution helped the university realize its vision for a vibrant, light-filled, inviting space meant for gathering, eating, working, and socializing.

Additional design features included replacement of the main domestic water and natural gas services that involved minimal disruption to the rest of the complex, and the upgrade of the main electrical switchgear that serves the entire complex. Our design solutions overall contribute to the building’s energy efficiency and the comfort and safety of the university community.

This project was completed using 3D building information modeling.
