Australian Avenue Housing and Community Development Center

Design and Construction Observation

Location: West Palm Beach, FL

Owner: City of West Palm Beach

Status: Completed

Construction Cost: $3 Million

The Project

The City of West Palm Beach constructed a new building for its housing and community development department.

Erdman Anthony was selected to provide design and construction observation services.

Features/Solutions

The project included asphalt pavement, concrete pavement, and paver bricks. The project was essentially landlocked, and the drainage overflow was directed to one of the city culverts connecting Gaines Park to the Culver Canal. That effort involved televising the large culvert with the use of a diver to confirm that the existing pipe was structurally suitable.

The project included preparation of the site civil construction plans, including plans for:

  • Stormwater pollution prevention
  • Utilities
  • Fire protection
  • Site grading
  • Drainage
  • Paving

Impacts

The new facility provides important functional space as the department serves the community, including space allocated for the Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach County.

Sustainable Design Impact

The site provides onsite retention of the surface water runoff in an exfiltration trench to reduce nutrients and suspended solids that would otherwise run off the site into the City canal system.
