Cayuga Medical Surgical Center

Commissioning and Energy Analysis

Location: Ithaca, NY

Owner: Cayuga Medical Center

Status: Completed

Construction Cost: $7.5 Million

The Project

Erdman Anthony provided commissioning and energy analysis services for Cayuga Medical Center’s new surgical center in Ithaca. The project consisted of a 16,400-square-foot addition and a 64,100-square-foot renovation done in phases.

Features/Solutions

In cooperation with NYSERDA’s New Construction Program, Erdman Anthony provided energy analysis that recommended upgrades to the wall insulation, improved windows, and reduced lighting power, fan power, and desiccant dehumidification. The analysis was done early on so that the design team would have cost-and-benefit feedback to consider.

To satisfy the owner’s goal of securing a LEED-NC v3.0 (2009) rating from the U.S. Green Building Council, our firm’s commissioning services included evaluating whether the design’s energy performance would meet various prerequisites.

Our activities during construction included performing site observations, conducting progress-review meetings, developing prefunctional checklists, and orchestrating functional performance tests.

Impacts

This project was the first in New York state to receive LEED certification under the LEED for Health Care protocol. Energy efficiency is now a key feature in the surgical center’s seven operating rooms, wound clinic, and areas for pre- and post-operative care, endoscopy, and patient and administrative support.
