Cornell University

MEP+R and Fire Protection Design, Construction Services, and Energy Modeling

Location: Ithaca and Geneva, NY

Owner: Cornell University

Status: Completed

The Projects:

Erdman Anthony has designed mechanical (heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning), electrical, plumbing, and refrigeration (MEP+R) and fire protection systems for several of Cornell University’s new builds and renovations. These design services have also included performing energy modeling and construction administration services. Our work at Cornell has addressed issues related to building performance, air and water quality, climate control, electrical distribution, life safety, and overall operation.

Features/Solutions:

Over the course of our 20-year partnership with the university, Erdman Anthony has designed new or improved MEP+R and fire protection systems for laboratories where research on veterinary medicine, food science, neuroscience, biology, chemistry, or various types of engineering occurs. The work has required coordination with a range of stakeholders, including architects, Cornell’s facilities professionals, and local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs).

Our team has also provided MEP+R and fire protection design for the university’s new or renovated surgical suites where wild and domesticated animals receive treatment. Improving the facilities’ water quality and temperature and humidity control, as well as consulting with Cornell employees on acceptable downtimes for the affected systems, were some of the challenges we overcame during those projects.

Designing specialized teaching areas, including the college of veterinary medicine’s state-of-the-art equine facility, are among other projects our firm has completed for the university.

Impacts:

The university community now has access to modernized and safer facilities for teaching, learning, and working.
