Steel Multigirder Bridge Replacement Project
Location: Elba, NY
Owner: Genesee County
Status: Completed
Construction Cost: $1 Million
The Project
This $1 million Locally Administered Federal Aid (LAFA) project involved replacing a single-span open grate-deck steel multigirder bridge over a drainage ditch with a new bridge. Erdman Anthony participated in all the design phases and performed construction inspection services for the project.
Features/Solutions
The new bridge consists of a 24-foot-span three-sided precast-concrete buried structure founded on an invert slab embedded below the stream channel, in accordance with environmental regulations and to mitigate necessary pile driving. Precast-concrete wingwalls contain the roadway embankment in the agricultural area.
Ancillary improvements involved improving roadway geometry to conform with current standards, installing new guiderails, and placing stone-fill scour protection to prevent erosion. The proximity of the adjacent roadway necessitated the design of temporary sheet-pile retaining walls with tiebacks to facilitate excavation.
Impacts
The vastly improved crossing and rights-of-way benefit motorists using this important road in Genesee County.
