The Project

Erdman Anthony handled mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design for the renovation of a 100,000-square-foot warehouse in Philadelphia, including provisions for robotic picking to fill grocery delivery orders placed online.

Features/Solutions

The robotic picking required extensive electrical and network wiring for the robots and conveyors occupying a large portion of the warehouse. The fire considerations required review with local officials to discuss limits on product types, storage heights, and densities.

The mechanical systems were fairly standard for dry storage areas, except for the requirement for humidity control. Large refrigerated coolers set at 35 degrees Fahrenheit now have a separate picker system to collect produce and other medium-temperature items.

Impacts

Our firm’s MEP design supported the growth of grocery delivery options available from the Giant family of companies for customers along the East Coast.
