Letchworth State Park Stream Restoration

Stream Restoration

Location: Castile, NY

Owner: NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

Status: Completed

Construction Cost: $1.4 Million

The Project

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation sought to address stream erosion, a sliding embankment causing a noticeable settlement in the roadway grade, and a deteriorating culvert in Letchworth State Park.

Erdman Anthony was selected to provide schematic design, design development, and construction document preparation for the project.

Features/Solutions

The design, which was permitted by the State Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, restored an open stream channel by filling and raising the stream in that area of the park. At the downstream end of the restoration and immediately upstream of Park Road, a series of drop structures now serve as a human-made waterfall to dissipate erosive water flow.

Other stream restoration measures included log revetments, live stakings, tree plantings, installation of fiber rolls on steep slopes, and grading to create vernal pools in the restored stream’s newly established floodplain area.

Park Road’s restoration work included full-depth reconstruction through the area of subsidence, roadway repair and rehabilitation, a new guiderail, and installation of transverse and longitudinal underdrains to intercept and convey subsurface water in a controlled manner.

Our team also prepared a comprehensive Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) to address erosion and sediment control during the project’s construction.

Impacts

From mitigating erosion to stabilizing the embankment, the restoration has helped preserve the park’s stunning natural features and its reputation as a destination for adventure seekers.

Sustainable Design Impact

Restoring the stream, reducing erosion, and stabilizing the terrain have helped preserve the splendor of the park, which is widely known as the “Grand Canyon of the East.”
