Guilford Technical Community College

Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Design

Location: Jamestown, NC

Owner: North Carolina Community College System

Status: Completed

Construction Cost: $1.1 Million

The Project:

Erdman Anthony provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design to convert an existing building at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) that had housed a chemistry lab into a building with three large classrooms and office space.

GTCC is the third largest of 58 institutions in the North Carolina Community College System, with six campuses and over 30,000 students enrolled. This project occurred on the Jamestown campus and was our firm’s first higher education project in North Carolina.

Features/Solutions:

To meet the client’s budget constraints, our designs were strategic. The main electric and plumbing utilities were reused and then supplemented to accommodate the new design as needed. The HVAC systems utilize the prerenovation packaged rooftop unit and were supplemented with new ductwork and variable air volume boxes to give the building’s occupants better thermal and airflow control. Most of the interior lighting is now LED, but some of the exterior lights were reused.

The new building management system is interfaced with the campus controls system, which allows the college’s facilities personnel to monitor the building’s systems remotely.

Impacts:

The college now has more classroom space in an energy-efficient building with modern controls.
