The Project:

The I-390 at I-490 interchange connects nearly 200,000 daily motorists to local centers of economic activity, including the airport, key technology and manufacturing parks, and downtown. Prior to any improvements, rush hour traffic congestion was prevalent.

Features/Solutions:

Phase 2 work included the construction of six new bridges and several on/off ramps and the widening and reconstruction of several miles of interstate highway.
Key features included:

  • Extensive earthwork
  • Asphalt pavement
  • A new noise wall
  • Numerous utility relocations
  • New traffic signals
  • New highway lighting
  • Installation of new overhead sign structures

To accommodate the needed improvements, extensive clearing and grubbing and the removal of four existing buildings were also required.

Impacts:

The completed project has revitalized deteriorated infrastructure and dramatically reduced traffic backups.
