I-86 over Chautauqua Lake Bridge Rehabilitation

Construction Inspection

Location: Chautauqua County, NY

Owner: NYSDOT Region 5

Status: In Construction

Construction Cost: $78 Million

The Project

The more than 40-year-old, 24-span Chautauqua County Veterans Memorial Bridge on I-86 over Chautauqua Lake near Bemus Point sees heavy commercial traffic, with the main bridge seeing an average daily traffic count of 13,000 vehicles. NYSDOT chose to rehabilitate this vital economic link for Southern Tier communities.

Erdman Anthony was selected to provide construction inspection services for the project, which includes full-time on-site personnel.

Features/Solutions

Roughly 5,300 feet of bridge deck will be replaced, and new median and side barriers will be installed. Bridge joints and high rocker bearings will also be replaced, and repairs to the superstructure will be done where needed.

In addition to the Chautauqua Bridge, two other approach span bridges and one ramp bridge to the east of the main span will also be rehabilitated.

Impacts

NYSDOT anticipates the rehabilitation work will double the lifespan of the bridge. The project is also expected to support the economic viability of the region through improving safety and ease of travel.

Work on the bridge began in the summer of 2023 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2026.
