Interstate 590/Winton Road Diverging Diamond Interchange

During the morning and afternoon rush hours, traffic at the Winton Road exit off I-590 in Rochester would become extremely backed up, resulting in delays. In addition, the interchange had a crash history significantly higher than similar higher traffic interchanges throughout the state. NYSDOT chose to construct a Diverging Diamond Interchange.

Erdman Anthony’s work on this project included:

• Creating a 3D model of the corridor that the contractor used for grading and final pavement construction
• Geometry modifications during construction
• Traffic-signal design
• Curb and island layout and details
• Retaining-wall design
• Cross-section views of the corridor
• Temporary traffic signals
• Construction cost estimate

The Diverging Diamond interchange is an innovative design that delivers smoother traffic flow, reduces backups and delays, and improves motorist and pedestrian safety.

In addition to the safety factors, this design was chosen over other options because it would take the shortest amount of time to construct, require the least amount of real estate, and provide the best cost value.

The project’s primary goals of reducing accidents and protecting people traveling through the interchange — as well as improving traffic flow to minimize commuter delays and frustration — have been achieved. Accidents in the interchange are down by 38 percent. There also has been a significant reduction in feeder-roadway accidents.
