PA Route 41/PA Route 926 Intersection Improvement
Realignment with Roundabout
Location: Chester County, PA
Owner: PennDOT District 6-0
Status: Completed
Construction Cost: $6 Million
The Project
Addressing the skewed four-way intersection at PA state routes 41 and 926 in Londonderry Township, Pennsylvania, was part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT’s) plan to improve a 10-mile section of a heavily traveled and economically significant rural corridor—one that moves 40% of the nation’s mushroom crop and connects the ports of Wilmington, Delaware, with US Route 30 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. PA 41 also serves as a primary route for travelers headed to beaches in Delaware.
A roundabout design was chosen to address safety and improve travel for the public, including commercial drivers and tourists.
PennDOT selected Erdman Anthony to secure the environmental clearance and provide traffic engineering and highway design services.
Features/Solutions
The finished project includes a roundabout designed to calm traffic and accommodate farm equipment and tractor trailers. Over 3,000 feet of approach roadway was reconstructed, and drainage and guiderail upgrades were made. On-site mitigation was also designed for a wetland impacted within the project area.
Impacts
The roundabout has improved mobility and safety for the public traveling through the intersection by reducing speeds along PA 41, eliminating the severe intersection skew, and accommodating future traffic demands.
