Radio City Music Hall Laser Scanning

Laser Scanning and Modeling

Location: New York, NY

Owner: Radio City Productions, LLC

Status: Completed

The Project

Producers for Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp. (MSG Entertainment) needed a model of Radio City Music Hall’s entire interior when designing images to project onto the Art Deco landmark’s curved walls and ceiling.  Erdman Anthony tackled the job.

Features/Solutions

Our firm used two scanners over three days to collect over 1 billion points in 46 scans. The scanning, modeling, and registration were completed in a fraction of the time required by conventional methods.

The finished model included features not common in typical survey projects: railings, house lighting, stage lighting, choral risers, signs, speakers, organically shaped arches, and 5,933 seats.

MSG Entertainment first used the model in 2011, when designing images for the Radio City Christmas and Radio City New York spectaculars.

Impacts

Producers now have access to a detailed model when designing images to project onto the curved walls and ceiling of “The Showplace of the Nation.”
