S-191A Pump Station

Construction Management

Location: Okeechobee, FL

Owner: South Florida Water Management District

Status: Completed

Construction Cost: $31.5 Million

The Project:

The South Florida Water Management District sought to build a new pump station at the northeastern edge of Lake Okeechobee.

The S-191A Pump Station is now a key component of the Northern Everglades and Estuaries Protection Program and has improved the quality of the water flowing into the lake.

Erdman Anthony was selected to provide full-time inspection and construction management services for the project.

Features/Solutions:

The S-191A Pump Station serves a dual purpose, providing for flood control in the L-47 basin and providing SFWMD with the ability to control the amount of water being treated in the Lakeside Ranch Stormwater Treatment Area (STA).

The pump station includes:
• Four submersible electrical pumps (150 cfs each)
• Trash rakes
• Emergency generators

Impacts:

The pump station was the final component of the Lakeside Ranch STA project, which has improved the quality of the water flowing into Lake Okeechobee by removing approximately 16 tons of phosphorus each year.

Sustainable Design Impact

This pump station provides flood control, manages the amount of stormwater to be treated, and helps reduce the amount of phosphorous that reaches the Everglades’ ecosystem.
