Entrance sign of Saratoga Tree Farm

Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery

Survey and Mapping

Location: Saratoga Springs, NY

Owner: New York State

Status: Completed

The Project:

Erdman Anthony was selected to perform a retracement boundary survey of a state owned tree nursery in Saratoga County, NY. The state has been acquiring property at the site for more than a century, and significant changes have occurred all around, including railroad and highway improvements, realignments, acquisitions, and abandonments. Residential developments began on contiguous lands, and no less than 40 abutters border three sides of the 128-acre site.

Features/Solutions:

Our geospatial services team established primary and secondary survey control, utilizing GPS and terrestrial observations. The record boundaries were re-established along the perimeter of the property, and once completed, Erdman Anthony utilized a teammate to set boundary markers along the 2,900-foot west line.

Impacts:

A retracement survey provides updated, current boundary information, which is crucial in the protection of the Lands of the People of the State of New York and serves to document existing conditions if the site is further developed or improved. The final, approved, signed and sealed map was ultimately filed in the Saratoga County Clerk’s Office by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

Sustainable Design Impact

Our work has helped protect the state’s tree nursery mission, which in Saratoga County includes producing trees and shrubs for remediation, wetland restoration, and riparian protection, with a focus on growing native species from local seed sources.
