South Avenue and Elmwood Avenue
131-K Arterial Reconstruction
Location: Rochester, NY
Owner: City of Rochester
Status: Completed
Construction Cost: $13.9 Million
The Project
This $13.9 million 131-K arterial reconstruction project in Rochester consisted of reconstructing South Avenue (Elmwood Avenue to Bellevue Drive) and Elmwood Avenue (Mt. Hope Avenue to South Avenue). It involved full-depth pavement reconstruction along both urban corridor segments, and our firm took a Complete Streets design approach to provide treatments to accommodate bicycle activity and improve pedestrian facilities.
Features/Solutions
The new features include a bicycle connection via a shared-use path, and a two-way cycle track along Elmwood Avenue, between the Highland Trail and the Elmwood Cycle Track west of Mt. Hope Avenue. Along South Avenue, bicyclists now have their own in-street lanes, as well as a one-way cycle track.
The project also ushered in new sidewalks, traffic signals, pavement markings, mid-block crossing enhancements, driveway aprons, drainage basins, water services, hydrants, lighting, and signing.
To gain support for the proposed improvements for bicyclists, our firm interacted frequently with the public during the course of this project.
Impacts
The reconstruction has introduced streetscape upgrades, lessened congestion, and made multimodal transportation safer in a bustling neighborhood.
