The Project:
The City of West Palm Beach sought to make significant improvements on 0.9 miles of Spruce Avenue, from 25th Street to 40th Street, in the Old Northwood and Northboro Park historic districts. Erdman Anthony was selected to provide design services for the project.
Features/Solutions:
The project’s improvements included:
- Rehabilitated asphalt pavement
- Improving stormwater-drainage flow
- Roundabouts at intersections
- Speed humps
- Advisory bicycle lanes
- Replacing damaged sidewalks
- Landscaping with native flora
- Adding signs, pavement markings, and ADA-compliant curb ramps
Impacts:
Traffic-calming elements and road-sharing safety concepts have reduced motorist speeds and improved safety for all modes of travel. The use of native trees and plants has enhanced the aesthetics and enriched the community.

New bike lanes help encourage cycling for short commutes.
