Reconfigured ramps and bridge replacements on SR 222 and SR 30 to enhance safety

SR 222/SR 30 Interchange Reconstruction

Construction Management and Construction Inspection Services

Location: Lancaster, PA

Owner: PennDOT District 8-0

Status: In Construction

Construction Cost: $72 Million

The Project

The SR 222 and SR 30 corridors are vital routes for Lancaster County’s commuters, regional commercial traffic, and the area’s many visitors. Population growth, additional truck traffic from commercial development, and a booming tourist industry have resulted in long traffic backups and safety concerns.

Features/Solutions

One mile of SR 222 is being expanded from four to six lanes through the use of the existing grass median, reducing right-of-way impacts. Several ramps are also being reconfigured, which will improve the flow of traffic from SR 30 to SR 222 and SR 272. Two ramp bridges are being replaced, and the under clearance of a third bridge is being improved through the lowering of SR 222.

Impacts

As PennDOT’s construction inspection and construction management consultant, Erdman Anthony provided constructability reviews prior to the start of construction and is currently documenting the contractor’s work, managing stakeholder coordination, and assisting with construction scheduling and other as-needed services.

After the project is completed, one of Lancaster County’s busiest interchanges will be better equipped to handle high traffic volumes, providing a safer, smoother connection for everyone traveling through the corridor.
