Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Design

The Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize, one of the world’s largest food retail groups, counts the Stop & Shop brand as part of its U.S. portfolio. Stop & Shop has stores in urban and suburban locations, and the stores Erdman Anthony has worked on have involved new builds and renovations.

Erdman Anthony designed all-electric heating for new stores in New England by eliminating gas-powered heating equipment in support of the company’s pursuit of net-zero energy goals. For existing stores where an all-electric heating design was not possible, solar panels were added to the builds to achieve smaller carbon footprints.

Ahold Delhaize also sought to address dim lighting in the stores’ produce departments, so our firm designed upgrades to energy-efficient LED fixtures that increased brightness to 70 foot-candles in those areas.

In addition, we designed housings for rooftop equipment units to mitigate noise disruption to nearby residential properties.

One of the more notable store renovations occurred on an island and required bringing in a new electrical service. Our electrical designs supported the existing store’s ongoing operations, as well as the transfer to the addition once the project was complete. A full-store mobile generator was also designed to support operations should the weather cause power outages on the island.

Erdman Anthony will provide ongoing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services for Ahold Delhaize as it continues to maintain and grow the Stop & Shop brand.
