Bridge Replacement

This $4.6 million Locally Administered Federal Aid Project (LAFAP) in which Erdman Anthony played a design and construction support role involved replacing a single-span steel-truss bridge over the Hoosic River in Pittstown, NY. Completed in 2016, the new 195-foot-long structure is a two-span continuous-steel multigirder structure, with a center pier in the river. 

Erdman Anthony and Rensselaer County worked with NYSDOT and New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to determine that the original structure, which was built in 1891, would be rehabilitated and retained on-site due to its National Register eligibility. The original structure now functions as a pedestrian-only bridge that is adjacent to the new bridge. 

Funding sources for the project included the Federal Highway Administration, NYSDOT, and Rensselaer County.

Erdman Anthony completed the preliminary and final design phases of this project in accordance with current procedures in the LAFAP Manual, the Design-Build Procedure Manual, and the Federal-Aid Policy Guide. Concurrent with design services, Erdman Anthony oversaw a Phase IA archeological sensitivity assessment and a Phase IB archeological field reconnaissance, along with right-of-way incidental and acquisition services. 

The design was not only code compliant, it also was a design of economy – both in terms of simple presentation and a careful use of budget resources.
