Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Telecom Design

As part of our open-ended contract with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, Erdman Anthony was selected to provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and telecommunications engineering services for the creation of a new retail dining and convenience facility called the Anchor, located in Gordinier Hall at Millersville University. The existing two-story Gordinier Hall had a well-established second floor that was utilized for student dining, meetings, and conferences, but the first floor was underutilized. Based on feedback from the students, it was suggested that a grab-and-go dining facility be established.

Through our architectural consultant, Kautter & Kelley, our design included renovation of the existing first floor as well as extension of the exterior façade within the existing patio area to create seating for up to 200 people, six retail food stations, a lounge, and offices to support the food services staff — all of which totaled approximately 12,000 gross square feet. Infrastructure upgrades included a new HVAC system; replacement of the existing steam boilers; a new electrical system; a new lighting and fire alarm system; phone, data, and security telecommunications; a new plumbing system, including domestic hot and cold water and sanitary; and vent and storm drainage systems.

The Anchor has become a huge success as a result of combining quick food service with an inviting lounge and seating area. It remains the food-service venue of choice on campus.
