Erdman Anthony provided engineering services (both directly and as part of an architectural engineering design team) for an 88-year-old regional grocery chain during a rebranding effort. Our work included HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire-protection system design, and construction support services for both new stores and remodels of existing stores.
The family-owned corporation operates supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The stores range from 40,000 to 100,000 square feet each.
The typical store design entails:
- LED lighting systems and controls
- Power distribution systems to refrigeration, lighting and HVAC systems
- Emergency and stand-by power systems
- Over five separate exhaust systems that handle more than 10,000 cubic feet per minute of exhaust air from multiple cooking suites, the in-store bakery, and smokers
- Domestic and filtered water systems
- Complex grease-trap systems
- Indirect waste systems
- HVAC systems for cooling, heating, and dehumidification
- Heat reclaim from refrigeration condensers to provide HVAC reheat and domestic water preheating
- Multiple fire-protection systems
The stores’ complexity required significant coordination with the structural and interior components so that visual and functional requirements were maintained and conflicts among disciplines were minimized.
Erdman Anthony also provided construction observation services by conducting frequent field visits. We checked that proper construction procedures were followed and that systems and equipment were installed correctly, as referenced in the construction documents and design drawings.
