Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

Laser Scanning and Modeling

Madison Square Garden Entertainment (MSG Entertainment) chose Erdman Anthony to scan and model Radio City Music Hall’s entire interior so that the entertainment company could have a model to use when designing images to project onto the curved walls and ceiling at this historic Art Deco landmark in Manhattan.

Erdman Anthony used two scanners over three days to collect over one billion points in 46 scans. The scanning, modeling, and registration were completed in a fraction of the time required by conventional methods.

The finished model included features not common in typical survey projects: organically shaped arches, 5,933 seats, and unique details such as railings, house lighting, stage lighting, choral risers, signs, and speakers.

With the model, MSG Entertainment first used these images, without distortion, in the production of the 2011 Radio City Christmas and New York spectaculars. The producers now have the ability to simulate – in virtual reality – the appearance of the projections from every seat and possible vantage point in the house.
