Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

Design and Construction Support Services

Erdman Anthony has provided design and construction support services for over 30 new-store locations and major renovations for a nationally recognized grocery chain. Our firm also has supported the design and construction of hundreds of remodeling projects for the family-owned chain, which is headquartered in New York.

This chain owns stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The locations have a “stores within a store” model, with departments such as meat, seafood, organic food, international food, and beer. Some locations also have in-store pubs and restaurants. The chain’s new stores range from 80,000 to 140,000 square feet each.

Services our firm has performed for this chain include:

  • HVAC
  • Controls
  • Refrigeration
  • Plumbing
  • Electrical
  • Fire-protection system design
  • Energy modeling
  • Construction support services, including on-site observation and commissioning of all systems

Each store has complex infrastructure that is designed to be flexible, expandable, and maintainable. The stores’ complexity requires significant coordination with the structural and interior components in order to maintain the visual and functional requirements and minimize conflicts between disciplines.

Our firm accomplishes this by using clash-detection software to review BIM system models to reduce conflicts significantly. Our firm also implements 4-D technology to coordinate construction phasing.

Erdman Anthony has performed various design services for 80 of the chain’s 98 stores.
