Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Refrigeration Design

THE PROJECT
Peace and West is a high-rise mixed-use building in Raleigh, North Carolina, that has a Publix food market on the first floor. Publix hired Erdman Anthony to do the mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and refrigeration design for the fit-out of the 46,000-square-foot store and its entrances.

FEATURES/SOLUTIONS
Given the parking garage beneath the store, the atrium water feature above it, and massive beams made of concrete instead of steel, the project required extensive consideration of the base building constraints. Refrigeration and mechanical systems, for instance, had to be placed below the apartments, which required installing acoustic hangers, isolating base amounts, and adding treatments to reduce noise pollution.

Grease ducts and fire-rated shafts were routed up 10 floors to the roof, and there is a quick-disconnect cleaning system on every floor. With no lot outside the building line, our design called for locating grease interceptors below a curved parking slab.

Our firm modeled and coordinated this complex project using Revit and Navisworks software, respectively. We also used a laser scanning service to confirm shell as-built conditions, such as precast pipe penetrations. These techniques allowed us to identify potential problems with as-built conditions and minimize construction delays and change orders.

IMPACTS
Closed-circuit cooling towers, LED lighting, digital controls for all major systems, variable speed pumping stations, and other design features were utilized with the goal of helping the store achieve reduced utility costs.
