Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

MEP and Refrigeration Engineering - Publix

Peace and West is a high-rise mixed-use building in Raleigh, North Carolina, that has a Publix food market on the first floor. Publix hired Erdman Anthony to do the mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and refrigeration design work for its first-floor 46,000-square-foot fit-out with entrances on multiple levels.

With a full parking garage beneath the store, an atrium water feature above, and massive concrete beams instead of steel, the project required intense coordination with the base building constraint. Condenser water systems are used to cool the mechanical and refrigeration systems, with VFDs, closed circuit cooling towers, LED lighting, and digital controls used to minimize utility costs. Refrigeration and mechanical systems had to be placed below apartments, which required acoustic hangers, isolating base amounts, and treatments to avoid noise pollution.

Grease ducts and fire-rated shafts were routed up 10 floors to the roof, and there is a quick-disconnect cleaning system on every floor. With no lot outside the building line, grease interceptors were located by Erdman Anthony below a curved parking slab.

This complex project was modeled with Revit and coordinated with Navisworks. We also used a laser scanning service to confirm shell as-built conditions such as precast pipe penetrations.
