Erdman Anthony provided preliminary and final design for three culvert replacements in Maine: Dover-Foxcroft (State Route 15), Newburgh (Kennebec Road), and Newport (Route 222).
The structures included a 20-foot-wide three-sided reinforced-concrete frame, an 8-foot-diameter corrugated-metal pipe culvert, and a 12-foot-wide reinforced box culvert. The configurations account for enhanced roadway geometry, including longitudinal grades, cross slopes and superelevations, along with improved side slopes with adequate clear zones that eliminated the need for guide railing. Additionally, all three culverts fit with environmental requirements of meeting streambed width and providing a natural stream bottom.
During construction, on-site single-lane alternating traffic was utilized at Dover-Foxcroft; an offsite detour was utilized at Newport; and a limited-duration offsite detour was utilized at Newburgh.
