Engineering Project Case Studies | Erdman Anthony

Stormwater Infrastructure Renovapping and Inspection Services

The City of Palm Beach Gardens in Florida selected Erdman Anthony as part of a team to provide stormwater-infrastructure mapping and inspection services for all 1,000 of the city’s stormwater structures and culverts. The project’s primary goal was to locate each structure and assess and catalog the structure type, condition, pipe size, direction of flow, and connectivity between structures, from the first upstream structure within a system to its downstream outfall point. The findings will guide maintenance plans and recommendations for improvements for the next five years.

Our team’s services included a combination of engineering, inspection, surveying, and GIS. The process began by collecting GPS data for each structure to provide the horizontal and vertical data. This data was then populated into a GIS database, which could be uploaded onto mobile devices used by field technicians to document, assess, and photograph each structure and culvert, including underwater components.

This field data was then synched to the GIS database, where authorized users could access it immediately. The GIS database was ultimately used to generate the city engineer’s condition, maintenance, and recommended-improvement report for presentation to the city’s leadership.

The city now has a living document containing the location, condition, and specifications of all city-owned stormwater structures. In addition to maintenance activities, the city plans on using the documents for its annual National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System reporting and assessments.
